HOW DO I....

Old long tooth veterans snarling already aint ya? I aint got a stoopid question, I just wanted to know if anybody has worked with walnut for a neck. My brother has a planer (and all the really cool shi...stuff I dont) and made me a buttload of walnut 1x2's. They're too pretty not to use, so I'm gonna, but I want someone to tell me what its going to look like, finish like, and sound like...oh, and what grit paper to use. and about those piezos...

  • One of my favorites. Easy to shape, sand and finish. If it is curly, even better.
  • the above is a simple three string 1X2 walnut (the light color is some heart wood that in walnut is cream colored.) I've used a lot of walnut and it works fine. Just don't breathe the dust. I often laminate it with maple to get a nice contrast. For 3 and four stringers it will be plenty strong. I usually finish it with a final sanding of 240 or 500 grit and then satin clear polyurethane stray. This way it comes out dark brown (coffee)... if you want it darker, go with a dark walnut stain before sealing it. hope this helps... the best, Wichita Sam
  • Thanks Otts, thats pretty wood. I know it's gonna get clear finish...too nice to cover up. I work mine by hand so I hope it aint too hard...lotta rasping to make that hard stuff get right.
