How did you get here?

I don't remember what I was lookin for when I saw a picture of a CBG and lost my grip on normalcy. I just know I was bitten and smitten and will never go back. I am still amazed at the new members who continue to sign up and remind me that I am not the only one. I just wonder...what was your path? How did you fall into this soup with us and how did you get here?

  • U-Tube was where I found them.
Took a look and, like all the rest of you, now have an addiction.
At least this addiction can't (or shouldn't) kill you, I hope.
Only found them a couple of months ago but log on every day to see what is happening out there.
Much easier to build than my regular guitar builds and a great fill-in whilst waiting for glue to dry etc. on my resonator guitar build.
  • Nephew sent me a you tube link of Seasick Steve playing cut my wings, started lookin at other related blues videos and the next thing I know I’m watching a video of Brother Yusef and Robert Hilton playing a 1 string cigar box and industrial steel can, wow I just had to build one of those, goggled CBG and found http://cigarboxguitars.com/ and went Radio Shack (Source here in Canada) lookin at parts and not knowing really what I was lookin at and when I started talking to the clerk low and behold a guy named Paul, sorry forgot his last name says if your building a CBG you need this and that, then when I left the store he showed me his guitar and told me about this site.
  • I saw my first cbg in Memphis about 20years ago.It took 15years for the seed to sprout .I was out of work and needed to keep busy to stay out of trouble and once I started I couldn't stop.I'm always thinking of my next build and what I can use. I have a degree in art and I found away to combine 2 of my passions, sculptur and music.
  • I’ve been working on my Bachelor’s degree in Ethnomusicology. I go to an alternative college, mainly self directed, independent study. I was studying the history of the blues, the history of guitar, and building a guitar (the bridge pulled off the acoustic I’ve had for about 25 years… I know I could have just glued it back on, but really how much fun is that…besides I got a grant to buy the guitar parts). One thing led to another, and studying the blues & the history of the guitar… well it was pretty much a matter of time before I ran across CBG’s and a bunch of related sites.

    Cheers,
    Rick
  • I've been fooling around making electric and steel guitars now and then since way back in the last century. Years ago, I ran across cookie tin banjos and CBGs at the Musical Instrument Makers' Forum site (http://www.mimf.com/). Some time after that, I found three beautiful quarter-sawn cedar Sam'l Davis boxes at a garage sale. They sat in my house for another year or two, till I finally got around to finishing my first CB mandola last year, and five more since.

These are more fun to make, and I really enjoy the reaction when people see them.
  • I saw an article about a guy named Rusty Hooper that had built about 50 of these bad little axes at the time. He didn't live to far from me so I loaded up the wife & kid and went to check out his collection. Life hasn't been the same since. I am working on my 3rd one now.
  • Well i got here by Mistake , like so many others i was on youtube one day looking at Guitar videos , thinking why the hell cant i play that good ! lol!!
then i saw a video saying Cigar Box Guitar so of course i thought WTF is a Cigar Box Guitar ?? never even heard of one before nevermind seen one , so i just had to check it out - it was Shane Speal playing Reddogs Screamin Eagel , that was it i was hooked , i had always wanted to build a guitar but never had the b***s to try , these Cigar Box Guitars seemed to be a little easier than a regular guitar to build so i bought all the materials and set to work on my first build

i aint looked back since , think it's getting on for two years now since i got this illness hehe!

    juju.
  • Well i started out to build a simple dulci strummer just to play because i didnt like playing mountain dulcimer in my lap because of my guitar background. I was just gonna build 1. So I did and I did and I did before i new it I couldn't stop. Then I started searchin on internet for more. Got to have more. Then I came across some of them hardcore cbg pushers like shane and ted and bairfoot. Gotta have more. Before I new it I'm chatting on the nation till 2 am in the morning. More more. I cant go anywhere without looking for boxes and things to stick on boxes. More, More. I think I need to go to Rehab. No wait a minute I got to finish that 3 stringer tomorrow.
  • just surfing the net lookn at banjo's, and saw a ad about cigar box guitars so i came a looking, and here i am
  • I saw one of the guys on boingboing.net had made a CBG and I said, "I don't even know how to play a guitar, but hey, I can do that!" $25 & one cleaned out garage later, and, in a very crude way, I have done just that.
