A special thanks to John "Reddog" McNair for sharing these plans.
We have archived many historic DIY instrument plans, but this one-string "electric" cigar box guitar is probably the most absurd of them all. In the directions of this 1919 article, readers are advised to hook up batteries and a rheostat to a single string. (Don't try this at home, kids.)
this is a very cool find !!!
Might want to wear gloves when playin' this rig. Plastic picks might not last long, but you could probably cut ice with it between sets.
Well........ how can I say it.............. at least they recommend using batteries.....................
With practice you can probably tell the note by the color of the string.
Wear only Playex brand "Living Gloves", OSHA approved safety goggles & hearing protection, 100% gum rubber pair of rubbers, your trusty asbestos underwear & an earth grounded "official" tin foil helmet.
Use a car battery, the string will heat up much quicker.
