I finally went retail and am overloaded after just one day
I posted a for sale ad on a gun forum that i belong to, just to test the water
I expected maybe one guitar, two at best
I just needed to get some money for parts to build more guitar
So far in less than a 24 hour period
3 guitar
1 amp
3 kits
and 3 that want to see my inventory of boxes to choose from, for me to build them one
I have enough parts and supplies to put one kit together and have 2 dulcimer strummers and one guitar ready to sell
I have one guy wanting a ukulele and one asking about a banjo
This is almost like a real job now
I'm frustrated , but I hope it lasts
I know it doesn't sound like much to our established builders, but when you are not prepared a little seems like a lot
You need to be a member of Cigar Box Nation to add comments!
I can already see how I would not enjoy the process as much if i had to do this full time
I spent all day today running around trying to replenish supplies and will pulling all niters for the next few days
That is mostly through lack of preparation though, I really only expected to sell enough to buy some more tuners and string
But everytime I log into that site I have one more person wanting one or with a request to make something they have in their mind
It's really more than about the money
People have decided that something I have created is worthy enough for them to spend that money that they worked hard to earn
That's a huge ego blast at a much needed time
The biggest thrill is the guy buying them as gifts for other people
The second biggest thrill is the pro musician that ordered one
I just ordered Kenni's CD so maybe by next year I'll be too busy playing also
I know it doesn't sound like much to our established builders......
First of all, congrats, isn't it fun when things turn good?
Second, some "established builders" are not about volume.... I built 100 my first year, 85 my second year... now I only build customs (maybe 20 a year, plus personal builds)... it's not that I don't like building anymore, but I like building better quality and really enjoy the creative process with a customer..... and, I'm playing more, so there's just less time to build lots of the some old CBG....
Do what you enjoy... enjoy the ride.... there's plenty of room for everyone....
