also I want to wire the controls for a pickup in a separate box.do you think that would be a problem?

If you join the Wiring group on this forum you will get a TON of information, everything you need.

The standard is to use 250K pots with single coils and 500K pots with humbuckers.  A higher value will give you a brighter tone while a lower value will attenuate some of the high end.  Some players like to use 250K pots with certain humbuckers and some people like 500K pots on single coils.

What do you mean by wiring the pickup controls in a separate box?

I don't see a problem with a seperate box but I don't understand the why. Where is your volume control? What I do see is a lot more work and expense. Do you plan to have two jacks in the tone control box? One for input, one for output, then have more cables? I don't get it. Seems like uneeded complexity.

I am not sure what you mean by controls in a separate box but if you think about it if you wire the pickup straight to the jack socket then plug into an amp then the amp is acting as the volume and tone control.  Also you can add an equaliser pedal between a guitar output and the amp for even more tone control.  Note that if you are talking about a piezo then a standard passive tone pot (as used on a magnetic pickup) doesn't do much to a piezo tone.
I plan on mounting a single coil to a acoustic guitar and don't want all the controls on the body. the pick up would be wired directly to the box. here is what I plan to do. sorry the writing is bad . but it is hard to write with a mouse.

Each to their own they say. No way I would not have a volume control handy. Tone control, bleh who cares.....Why the hassle? Why not just use the volume and tone on the amp? But hey, whatever floats your boat.

Now I think I understand - they sell a similar idea below where the pickup fits in the sound hole, the controls clip externally eg to the guitar strap and you don't have to drill holes in your guitar.

Yes it should work - I haven't seen one up close so I am not sure how easy it is to adjust the height of the pickup to get the best sound :o)

Thanks for your help
