If I may ask, and please pardon me because I am not much of a player, can make a lot of noise or am I much of a builder. But why all the groups? I thought the nation was the group to belong to. Cigar Box Nation is what the header says. Now I have no problem with dulcimers or any other home made instrument being on here but. The simplicity of what the Nation started out as is gone. The music some of you guys produce just blows my mind, your all amazing but why have all these groups. A group for this a group for that. I thought it was about what kind of music can we create from simple instruments. I guess because I just play for me, I don't understand. And so many of you build instruments if I had the money I would buy from all of you.
Thank you for your time

Roger, I agree with you. I always loved the old Yahoo!Group where all conversations happened in one room. We'd discuss performing, building and everything else together. However, these type of social networks have become the norm...with the groups, forums and features. While it does discourage a much larger communal spirit, the payoff is more focused conversations on a myriad of topics.

But you make one really good point about the music being central. You're absolutely right! As owner of this bar, I have the duty to bring that focus back to the joint. I'm working on a lot of things behind-the-scenes to do this and will be unveiling them in the next year. One of the first is the CBG Christmas Album project.

Eventually, I'd like to see the Nation sponsor CBG tours and concerts. It's a big dream, but I think it's possible.

Hey Roger I enjoyed your video so would have to dispute your playing ability - it sounded good to me. Likewise you have probably built more cbg's than most on the site and have made a career out of selling them. Regarding the groups, I agree it gets overwhelming and disorganized. Part of the group proliferation is obviously interest and part networking. Then you have the classification or identification issues some of which i think detract from the sense of overall cohesion and community. I remember having somewhat regretful feelings when groups formed based on region or nationality and within the last month gender specific groupings have been created. I understand the rationale but the drive to create niches and differentiate bothers me. People are here now for all sorts of reasons. I pick and choose between the threads, photos, videos and still get enough of a buzz from the creativity in building and playing and in the willingness to share and help. But yep, its gotten complicated.
I think you have me confused with a different Roger, maybe Roger Martin. Me I really have no talent, can make a lot of noise though lol.

Personaly, I think the groups are a great idea. I wasn't around for the original forum, but with groups it makes it easier to find inspiration and help from the area of your specific interest. It also helps you get connected with the people that you share the most common interests. Then I can also see the latest updates to all the other threads on the home page, so I don't miss out on something going on in another area of the forum. I may never have found some of the info I was looking for if it wasn't for some of the groups...
I agree with Todd, but can see the other viewpoints as well. I new here so don't have a historical reference. I assumed that the groups sprang from the growing number of members and increased diversity of instruments. I like the groups since you can ask questions specific to your interest and not have to wade through all entries in the forum. I enjoy learning about all types of instruments and builders, but find it comfy to have groups of "like minded" members that provide a focused discussion.
yup your right. the rest of my thought stands though.
LOL I dare say there's plenty of people that have built way more CBG's then me,and better 1's too, by far.
I stick to a basic formula for most of my builds to keep costs down for my customers.
Speaking of customers,,I'm VERY lucky to work (full time) where I do in a MALL where I can display my wares every day.I'm also lucky that I am allowed to sell while I'm on the clock working for the mall at the same time.I never forget that if it wasnt for the luck of the draw I would have the same problems showcasing my product too that a lot of folks have.
Also I aint all that good playing these things either.I just start bangin on em until somebody buys 1 before I bang it to death,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, LOL
It's all about having fun and limitless possibilities...Remember, be true to the box, and the !box will be true to you! LOL! That's the Zen of it.
For what its worth....
When I first joined, I was really confused about whether to post my points / questions / confessions in the groups or the general forum.
The groups tend to come and go... theres a lot of them now, and some lie almost inactive (including, ahem, my own!). They do however create an instant flow of ideas and inspiration when first started. Maybe the answer would be to streamline the groups so that we dont end up with 8 x womens cbg groups, or 15 groups about how to build a loud resonator etc??
I generally post in the main forum, as I think more folk see it... it is on the front page afterall, so theres usually more feedback, but the groups do have their uses.
I'm kinda on both sides here. I started the CBG Tabs group and if it gets removed, no problem, it doesn't get much attention anyhow. But I think there are some really good groups here -- Secrets of the CBG Underground, CBG Building 101 and the Recording Studio (and yes, Ted's Mad Scientist Lab) for example. Great community focus groups. I would hate to lose the most important groups, but honestly most of them can be... well... a waste of bandwidth.
I got an idea [No kidding Wes...] :

Perhaps the bar owner here will review the groups and those that fail to meet certain criteria such as membership numbers, lack of or last date of activity, irrelevance, failure to produce anything of use to the overall community, or whatever he deems not fit... something such as that. Then post that these groups are slated for removal. The owners can be given the chance to agree or post a reason why it should remain.

Well, I will offer up CBG Tabs to be removed, but I see it actually had a post a day ago... Other than that, its rather dead.

I'm with Rooster & Wes on this, the groups are important for individual types of instruments that have unique aspects for building/playing. What we have now could use a little consolidating into an easier to navigate format. I thoroughly enjoy the "Stupid" group, as do 26 other members, but its a little daunting to find info you need or remember where it was.
I think there's room to cull a few of the 78 we have...$.02
