I know that a lot of people on here have seen the o'brien guitars tip du jour on making a drill press router. Has anybody here tried it? Also, he uses drill bit blank stock for the router. Does anybody know of a good source for this? I was hoping I could find some different sizes and lengths than what's in my normal bit set. Any help would be great!

Take any drill bit, flip it over and use the part that normally goes into the chuck of your drill.
In case you haven't see the video yet:

Michael, thanks for putting that out there for anyone who hasn't watched the video and might be confused. I'm looking for actual blanks so I can experiment with diameter and length to find something that works well for me. Thanks for responding.
Round tool steel bits are available at Harbor Freight.
Since I have a metal lathe ... I have bit blanks in the shop.
Can you boys and girls guess what Matt's gonna try today?

Thanks Matt. Let us know how it goes.

Ummm, the tool steel is A HUGE STINKIN' LOT HARDER than a drill bit. I started on the tool steel, gave up in 10 min. Had a drill bit ready to go in 3-4 min. ( I have a virus and was ready to get back in the house.)
Works great, I'm sure the tool steel will be better. It can even be used to do light duty thicknessing.
I thinking about using this for nut slots.

OH My God I can see about 10 different applications for this! -- Headstock cuts (as in the video), digging out a peg 'channel' as on a mountain dulcimer, cutting F-holes (GUYS I gotta try this one!!!), Gee gust about anything!!!

I'm gonna add this to the Secrets of the CBG Underground group.

Oh I beg to differ. I am not the genius. O'Brien Guitars is. I see possibilities! Bwaaaaaa haaaa haaa.

BTW, it works but you have to have a good template tho AND caution: Pressboard (composite or cardboard)box panels might not work as planned. I tried the bit on a pressboard panel to make a template. Fuzzed up very badly. Of course I could have been using the press at too slow of a speed. I will try speeding it up.

Silver steel is another good material and is easier to work than tool steel.
If you want to harden it just heat it until the cutting edge turns blue and quench in oil.
Hope this helps.
Hogs.
I have been a machinist for 30 years and have never heard of this type of cutting tool. After seeing the video I'm hooked, what a great idea.
As far as round heat treated tool blanks go you can get them from most machinist tool suppliers in any size you would like, just google them..

But don't try to shape the tool steel with a cheapo grinder. Unless you have tons of time and patience.

Just looking at what I done I was also gonna play with the tool profile. I'm thinking that a concave tool shape would cut better than than just flat.

Thoughts?
