So, here we are, setting up another CBG forum. Yahoo is great and all, but it feels so 1980's. It reminds me of the old modem and bulletin board days. Esh, glad those days are gone. So far, so good with the new site.

What are the plans for the new site? More builds, more playing, more plans to swap, more self-promotion for shows, sales and all that stuff?

Looking forward to this new adventure.

I have a feeling the Forums will continue on with building tips and endless ramblings. I have a feeling this place will be the nerve of the revolution...where people network for gigs, places to sell, etc. That's why I put the Chatroom right on the front page.

Well, I can say that I am greatfull for CBG group. I just became a member of the other cbg group right before the moderator had his "BF" and decided to throw away a good thing. I am glad to be here on this group now. Hopefully there will be less drama. Hopefully this can be the home of HOMEMADE cbg's. It's great and that gifted craftsmen/women are making a few dollars on ebay selling their cbg's, more power to them. But let's not forget that the cbg is a homemade instrument that damn near anyone can build with a minimum of tools and supplies, limited only by his or her imagination. This is what has made this wonderful instrument so accesible to everyone. I really like the thought of people freely sharing ideas/ improvements on their instruments for others to take advantage of when they build their own. I feel that even though a CBG is a homemade/ handmade instrument, it still has a lot to offer to the creative guitar player. Just because it's homemade does not mean it sounds homemade, that does not mean the music that finds it's birth in that box is in some way inferior to that of a store bought guitar. So, let's take pride in the instruments we make.......regardless of what materials and tools we have. Let's also take pride in the music we make with our CBG's while still having fun (ain't that the point?). One site I just visited (sorry can't remember the site) stated "don't build trash". I would add to that: "don't play trash, either". It's a fun instrument, but it's also an instrument that can make some serious music. Let's have fun, but also make serious music.........so that maybe outsiders will pay a bit more serious attention to it's possibilities. Thanks again for this group, and all out there that are helping to make this happen.......great photos.....great recordings .....keep up the great work. Let's hope this group will last longer than the other one.

I think that was my site. I have a builders tip that says "just because you make something from trash doesn't mean you can get away with making trash." Sam Kamaka Sr. is also credited to telling his son, Don't make trash.
I like playing trashy music on trashy instruments for trashy people in trashy places. Does that make me trashy?

Bill,

What I hope is that we don't elimenate the forums that are a good fit for certain types of people.... My only negative about the Nation right now is that it is so segmented that I lose a sense of the "big picture". There will certainly be a bunch of nice small groups, but I'm not there yet about it being a "community"..... Right now CBGBuilders forum is doing that well.

We will see...

the best,

Sam
I was skimming through a This Bike is a Pipe Bomb interview in a zine a while back and the one phrase that jumped out at me was "diy doesn't mean don't try".

Shane,

I can probably assure you that CigarBoxGuitarBuilders forum won't be going anywhere any time soon. As far as "endless rambling" is concerned, that's never been a problem with CBGB's. You have a nice thing here and it has useful features. Best of luck.... I hope it doesn't become a time monster that eats your lunch.....

the best,

Wichita Sam

....endless ramblings?..... (deep sigh)
...."old forums"... Joker, please don't lump them together.... inspite of a common structure they were/are as different as night and day.
people helping people is what makes this a great nation to me but, there are many other good things going on that is impressive to me. photos for example, there were over a thousand photos on this nation in about 4 days and each and every photo on this site tells a story, with that said you have more than a thousand stories told without anyone ever saying a word. and everybody here can have freedom to talk to each other and learn from each other and help each other, freedom is important to a nation because it makes the individual feel like they dont have to be like everybody else unless they would like to. everyone has particular favorites so those people that are the favorites can get a sense of satisfaction for their accomplishments weather it be in building or the aspect of playing the instruments they or someone else builds. so in my opinion there are many great things about this nation that i like and i only spoke of a few. there are many more things going on than i can count, such is the growth of a nation. everybody take care and have a great holiday season from the bairfoot cajun to all you good people. 2009 can only get better.
"so that maybe outsiders will pay a bit more serious attention to it's possibilities."

do you really need the outsiders, though?

if i'm trying to do political organizing, yeah, outsiders are really fucking important - it's why anarchists in boston have been demonstrating in front of the greek consulate off and on all week. if you want to change shit, you need mass support.

on the other hand, culturally, you really just need enough people to keep something going. if all of a sudden three times as many people started trying to go to punk rock basement shows in a city, it wouldn't be sustainable anymore.
