I am new to cigar box guitars, having purchased my first instrument from a British maker only recently. I plan to make my own instruments, staring this week, in fact ...
I wanted to arrange this slide version of the Parting Glass by Justin Johnson for the 3-string guitar (using Musescore to do the staff and tab).
Justin Johnson on his ironing-board guitar
This moody and haunting version is especially interesting as, in all the archives I have checked, this tune is always rendered in 4/4 time, yet Justin plays his version in a waltz time.
I have had real trouble with the second half of the chorus (bars 29 to 32) as I cannot make out what Justin is playing. So I settled for some interesting chords which at least resolve to the required G/Em. I am not helped by Justin playing this in Gm whereas my version, for G-D-G, must be in Em ...
I have no musical education, so this is a real challenge. I will attach a pdf and an mp3 that Musescore generates of my first draft which I made using Musescore -- as I am certainly nowhere good enough to attempt my own recording yet.. (The recording does not do the “from the sign” repeat.)
I am hoping someone will be interested in helping me find all the mistakes and making this work as well as possible. This is my first attempt at tablature.
Best wishes to everyone, Keith
