Errrrgh. I'm not one to begrudge someone their hobby, but dammit! Some guy is taking really large, gorgeous, hard to find boxes, slapping a $2.50 clock kit in it, and charging $45 dollars for it as "wall art".
DO THEY HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH THOSE BOXES?!?!?!?!?! It's like getting a 2' square slab of koa and running it through a chipper to get a single toothpick. Blasphemy!

It's sure enough not a waste of material if it's all scrap anyway. Better you find something to do with it than just trash it. One of the things I've been doing is saving the sides from all the fretboards that I make when I trim them on my band saw. Rosewood, ebony, all that. Later, when I get off my butt and finally start doing bound fretboards, I'll have all this awesome material that I can plane down rather than just putting plastic strips on the thing.

Koa chopsticks may sound like a poor use of material, but when you have a handfull of pieces as big around as pencils, what else can you do?
The ebony scraps I'll use for banjo bridges....

If its a clock and it doesnt rock well buy up all the cigar boxes in the world and make guitars. then you wont have an issue but really enjoy the boxes while you can as the tobacco industry is taking some hits. Whatever the boxes become enjoy and kick back with your cigar box guitar and make it rock dude, ok off to smoke..
Cigar Boxes afre being used for just about any craft, guitar, clock, bird house (thats a new one to me), purse, valet,decor, whatever.. i like it all not one better thatn the next but sure enjoyment of the LEAF!... thank you and please sit back and relax with your favorite cigar if you dont have a cigar i will send you one..thank guys

You guys have outstanding talent for making these guitars! The cigar boxes have been around longer than all of us have been around and long after.. Lets all enjoy these fine cigar boxes and please make sure you support the people making the boxes.. The cigar makers.. I can totally relate with this box deal.Last Friday nite I had a couple come in my shop carrying a large bag that they wanted me to see.It had a great Cohiba in it that had a clock kit installed.Seems they bought it across the street in 1 of the small outside MALLS and the guy they bought it from SENT THEM OVER to ME so they could show me WHAT HE DID to a perfectly good cigar box.
However I STILL sold them a "proper" box outfitted with the proper stick and wire screwed to it like any self respecting cigar box deserves,LOL
(Made more money off the folks then he did to boot,,,)
Threads like this are ONE of the reasons I love this site ! I'm all for what can you do with a cigar box, the 3 string CBG still rules, but, this is one group of creative people that can really make me smile...
Tom those are nice birdhouses, but some of those boxes would have made nice CBGs!! On the Koa toothpick note, I'll take two, please.

I sold 5 of these last weekend (avg $12-$15) at a plant show and sale my wife is involved with. I've thought about making a clock or 2 as well. They sell cheap movements for about $6 at hobby stores. I pretty much only use boxes that I deem unsuitable for instruments though (cardboard, too small, etc.). I find it to be a great use for these surplus boxes I sometimes end up with. Just got an e-mail this morning from a friend with a request for 2 more to be sold to some co-workers of hers. Not looking to get rich from it. Just a little extra $$$ for guitar parts.
By the way, I'd like to get on the list for one of those toothpicks please! Ha!

i have been hunting another one to build a 6string guitar and a 4 string bass set out of.
