Hey guys. I started building guitars about a year and a half ago. Before that, I had no experience with instruments whatsoever. I'm including two pictures. One is the first guitar I ever made and the other is the most recent guitar that I've made. It's important to me that you guys see these next to each other, not because I want to show off about how far I've come, but because I've heard so many people now claim that they'll never be able to make guitars as good as [insert name of veteran here]. Anyone who says that the ability to build a certain type of guitar is out of their league is just creating an artificial limit. Just keep pushing yourself to master harder techniques and you will get there. I promise. Josh

  • Probably the same damned box. I got mine from Amazon. You know how it was in the beginning: "Where will I ever get a used cigar box?"

    Little did we know.

    Josh--

It's funny, but I think we made identical first guitars.... Did you get your box at craft store from the "build a purse" aisle? I still play my first build. I screwed up all kinds of stuff (didn't really know how to *use* the box), but it still played and made me smile every time I picked it up. Still does.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane....

  • Some excellent stuff done there. Unfortunately I do not own a camera, but will get some shots done of a few of mine, although I would not rate mine as being anywhere near as good looking as some of these here, but then again, I am more interested in the sound generated than the looks...
  • I love slotted headstocks... A really logical solution for string break over the nut and looks good too... nice build.... the best, Wichita Sam

Well here's my first build. I count it as a sort of experiment ;-)

I made the box, out of imaptience, and as mentioned elsewhere, just grabbed the dimensions out of thin air.
    It's big, and it's loud!
    It plays pretty well, slide
I need to cut down the nail I used for a nut and also file a decent bit of wood for the bridge: it's just an offcut under that nail at present.

Still, I had fun building it and learned a lot about what to do. I bought a cigar box on e-bay so next build won't be far behind :-)

  • Ted - love the "wings" on the El Producto. Pretty inventive for a 1st build I must say!
  • This is a hilarious! I have had no problem with elongated pictures until I look at juju post in this thread. AND his is the only ones elongated!

  • As far as learning goes, your screw ups are always ten times more valuable than your successes.

Great photos Josh. I've only built 4 CBG's so far and a couple of amps but I'm learning (and hopefully improving) each time. Most of the learning is what NOT to do, but it's all good, as they say.
