Hi all!

I'm in the planning stages of a baritone build, probably a fretless around 28", and I will probably use a PAF for the main pup, but might put a piezo in, too. So, my question is, has anyone used a separate output jack for each pup rather than volume or blender pots? I remember back in the 70s and 80s stereo guitars were a big thing but I never played on. Anyhow, as always, all advice appreciated.

Hi, here is a condensed version of the building steps for my Vintage Hubcap build. Called a UFO by some. Ha-ha.
I have made it into 5 parts, covering:
1 forming the ply rims.
2 Assembly of body, neck, and tail blocks.
3 more bodywork, and neck and heal assembly.
4 Neck work, setting up, making the peghead.
5 Fingerboard, fretting, fitting electrics…All done.

1- The sides and back are made of 3ply. Two strips [with the grain going across the strip. I use moisture and heat to help with the bend. The kerfing for the back stiffens up the sides and gives more gluing area for the back. A flat strip could be used instead of kerfing the timber.

I wanted to keep the vibration in the hubcap so the thick 12mm ring was added to the top of the body.

A body was used so that I could get some acoustic sound and any sound from the hubcap was not soaked up by my clothing when played close to the body. In other words, I did not want to plug it in all the time.

Please ask questions if I have not been clear…use HTML of course.

His writings & recordings, especially his seminal Experimental Musical Instruments Magazine have influenced everyone from Tom Waits to our own Shane Speal, who says "there may not have ever been a cigar box guitar movement had I not discovered Bart Hopkins back in the late 1990's."

Recently, Hopkin has been uploading video demos of his massive trove of instruments to his Youtube channel, giving short descriptions. This latest video features his "Guitar-Like Things," stringed instruments that resemble guitars, but have otherworldly features. We describe these as "breaking the rules" because Hopkin uses some radical designs in each, including guitar strings that branch out into a Y, guitar bodies made from wobbly steel and bridges that excite strings quite differently than conventional ones.

Most of these instruments were created with a one-piece neck/body that was simply fretted. We've listed each instrument after the video and linked to more information on his website.

I searched through older threads. I found a couple that could be helpful but the links did not work. I have the guitar neck of my first ever guitar. Sentimental to me. I want to use it in the build. I have made ukuleles and guitar amps but I have never made and electric six string. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This is my latest guitar, which includes an idea I had for an on-board distortion module.

I had previously built a soft distortion unit as a separate pedal and it worked pretty well. So I thought I would try to add one to the guitar and house the Stomp button to activate it on the soundboard.

Other features of the guitar are :

Unidentified hardwood neck - The wood came via a friend and it may be an African wood

Homemade 'cigar' box as I still struggle to…

I had previously built a soft distortion unit as a separate pedal and it worked pretty well. So I thought I would try to add one to the guitar and house the Stomp button to activate it on the soundboard.

Other features of the guitar are :

Unidentified hardwood neck - The wood came via a friend and it may be an African wood

Homemade 'cigar' box as I still struggle to find the genuine article in the UK

Box uses finger joints using a table saw jig I made a while ago. So pretty strong

The added module is known as a 'soft distortion' amplifier. Unlike 'hard distortion' which works by completely clipping the tops of the signal, soft distortion just 'flattens' the signal more as the amplitude increases.Needs germanium diodes rather than silicon, then just one op-amp and a few resistors and caps etc.

Battery powered via a 9V PP3. So the wiring harness looks like this

And the final build ...

Finally, here is what it sounds like with and without distortion switched in.....

https://youtu.be/A5diCG1baBQ
