OK I decided that the blues should NEVER and I mean Never be played with a CAPO!
Can I get an Amen...

My Hero used a capo... But I did see his concert in Dallas before his death...
SRV, BB and Joe Cocker....on the stage together....
Jimmie Vaughan is a big fan of em too. Most old school players are seasoned with em, great way to bring your instrument into a different register, why would anyone disparage em, theyre great.
Work awesome in two guitar lineups too, especially with less accomplished players who just thrash it out - two big loud electric guitars can quickly and easily become a muddy, middly mess... why not shift one to a higher register? do you often see 2 cellos in a string quartet?
ya - i have heard capos called "cheaters" also - in my experience those people either didn't play guitar, or they hadn't ever used a capo / or played in another key- they simply didn't understand their use, which is to change the tuning of your instrument without having to retune the whole git. - 1 sec. from E tuning to G tuning to A tuning with capo - or retune manually each time and possibly kill the momentum of the show -
a capo is like a keyless chuck on a drill - i have also heard slides called "cheaters" - hahaha! whatever
Well, I guess I might as well join in. The video I posted a couple of weeks ago (Bordering On Tuneful/Song For Austin) was played on a 20" scale 3 string with a capo on the 3rd fret. That song isn't blues, but almost everything else I do is, and I always use a capo on that particular instrument.
I hope that doesn't come across as "snippy". I don't mean it to be negative at all.
Hi Jeff.
No. Not in a quartet, but one of the most beautiful pieces of music on earth (and maybe any other planet) is the Schubert C major quintet, which very definitely has two cellos.
All the best.

The "No Capo" rule applies only to jazz..it's a definite no-no to use a capo at a jazz gig...remember the lyrics from Sultans of Swing?...."...check out Guitar George, he knows all the chords..."
For all other genres it's fine...
You failed already at "the blues should NEVER", bro.
Well, probably 7 bar blues won't be a runner, but AFAIK there were no rules like "standard blues tuning" or "thou shalt not use a capo for it is a devils own contraption and a slap in the face of our Lord, B.B. King."
OTOH - quite an interesting discussion, but - is it some kind of a holy war? "Capists" vs. "Retuners"?
Like "C extension" vs "5th string" vs "purists" among the upright bass players? ;-)
