I get them for a couple of bucks here in the US, looking at the wood or paper?
I was thinking wood for my first one

I am probably undermining some niche market, but I would suggest asking if someone would be kind enough to quote shipping one from where they are abundant (they aren't very heavy), so you have the option of buying local with a 'sanity check' built in. For example, assuming one fits in a Flat Rate USPS Priority International envelope for which postage is US$13.95, and the price ranges from $1-$4 here, anything under the converted equivalent of US$15 there is cheaper, and you get to see what you're getting with no risk of damage or loss.

I have no idea what a reasonable price would be in the UK. $15 here, however would be too much, unless I had zero options locally. I must be lucky as I have found three cigar stores between my home and job that have $1-3 boxes. Two of them charge $3 for all boxes, and the other one has a lot of $1 boxes plus fancier ones up to $10 or so. The last store donates all proceeds to some charitable organization.

I wish the cigar stores had necks, too!

Thanks for the reply murray ive managed to find a place that does them at £5 a box and its not too far from me,I know what youre saying about the next our local  diy store dosent sell any wood other than pine, ive managed to get a length of poplar though cant wait to start building . cheers

I picked up a couple today.

They're beautiful.
Goin' to build some Ukes and a couple of demo units....got 2 sold already...
nice
Check past the diy stores and I'll bet you'll find some building supplies that normally deal with contractors that have selections of other woods suitable for building CBGs.  If you're in a large city you may have to hunt, but a small town or in the countryside, probably wood distributors or mills might be available too, and if all else fails I know there are online sources online in the UK---some I'd love to have availability at a reasonable rate and no quarentine.
I bought mine off ebay sellers in the USA, as mentioned the shipping charges are horrendous - 26 dollars / 16 GBP, but two or more combined shipping can ease the cost on a single box.
Lowes has stock 1 1/2 poplar, pine and oak strips they are 3/4 thick and are very nice. the pieces are 6 feet long. Will make 2 necks..

I got this hairbrained idea to look for 4, 6, maybe 8 of the same kind of cigar box and take them apart, and 'bookmatch' or however else I could make a larger top and bottom to make a larger instrument.

I stopped somewhere last weekend and they had 8 or 9 red Punch boxes...I took 8 at $1 each!

There were 4 even larger ones, Don Fuente or some guy who sounds like that, about 8"x12", all the same but priced from $2 to $5...I said 'huh?' at the cash register total, explained my confusion, and he rang those in at $2 each. A customer walking by said "too bad those aren't full boxes"!

Sorry to sound like bragging, but it seems to be cheaper than buying sheets of cedar! They're kind of thick anyway...
