I was having a discussion with a friend of mine who had a hobby of revamping of what he called finger killer guitars(unplayable) that he'd pick up cheap. He uses razor blades( dollar store snap off type) of varying lengths to accommodate the spacing of the frets as rockers.

Just curious does anyone do this?

Not sure I understand what is being described. How is a razor blade used as a fret rocker? More importantly...Why?

There are an infinite number of other straight edged metals that are far safe than razor blades.

If your friend is only using the sharp edge of the blade laid across three frets and rocked, why not use something not so likely to hurt you (a short steel ruler, nails? whatever.

Maybe I'm just not understanding what is being done with the razor blades.

Hi Will, re your rocker question. I use something with a hard flat surface so that when I rock I can hear any slight click, click sounds, either side of the high fret. Here its a 12'' steel rule cut up to suit different instruments scale lengths. Here's a photo of my rockers. made before the one piece rocker was available from Stewmac. Sorry for the delay answering. Taff

Just transferred this from Brent's "high fret"  thread, and it worked. my thought to this thread are along the lines of Tom's

Taff

I guess I left this a little lite on information. What he does is dulls the sharp edge on fine grit paper so it doesn't leave a nick in the frets. He then rocks it back and forth(if one is high) between his index and pointer finger, using a small hardwood mallet with a plastic face to tap down the offending fret. Talk about overkill, he's either very meticulous or flat out anal, don't know which. Don't get me started on his filing frets. The man turned out some really nice pieces though! He also thinks CBGs are children's toys!

Taff, guess I'll dig out my old Starrett straight edges and carve them up.
