Hi all, you could say that this the most unenjoyable post I have had to make.
I feel I should respond to a post by a member of our community who recently attacked me, on many fronts, stating inaccurate claims about me. Although the post has been removed, I will respond to the issues as I remember them.
Some of you may not have seen it so I will outline the members comments, or at least my understanding of them.
The post contained inferences that as I have only built 10 or so CBG’s I am not qualified to make comment, especially to those who have built hundreds of CBG’s This attack may have been triggered, but festering for a while, by the way I answered another member question on soundholes. I had already answered the question, when a post appeared with another suggestion and a photo of a guitar to make the issue clearer. I responded again not to the poster of the photo but to the enquirer but made the mistake of using that image to explain more fully what I do, and why.
Re: Uneducated guessing……….
Well I have said this many, many times in my posts that the suggestions and findings I share in this forum are my own findings, my suggestions and advise come from me. If I have not done it, I will not share advice. I do not use terms like “there’s dozens of ways” or “I know many who people say”. I don’t have to guess as the books I have on lutherie, stacked side by side span nearly three metres.
Only built ten cbg’s / go back to basics……..
Well that’s a long story. One does not wake up one morning and decide to build a guitar [full size] I have been building ,on and off, but more regularly in the last 7 years instruments the likes of which are shared on this site since back in the late 1950’s, when I was a kid playing at the local youth centre. Cbgs or homegrown recycled instruments are not new to me. I built some in 1983, supported my grandkids to build banjos, dulcimers and an electric guitar [then aged 12 years old, now 21. Oh, and I have 20 Cbg’s hanging in my showroom.
Hurting the feelings of other members.
Well that’s a hard one. I feel my contributions are given careful thought, I’m mindful not to criticise the work of others, unless it is sought. You will find that any suggestions or the comments I make are normally in depth and accompanied by photos if required. I do not use quick one or two sentence responses. The member also mentioned the fact that, if I remember correctly, that there are members on here that have built hundreds of guitars, well my input is not directed at them unless they asked the question. Anyway, if one has built hundreds of guitars there could be a lot of info flowing through the pages from them, but I do not know who they are.I respect a person weather they have made 300 guitars or struggling with their first.

There’s more but I’m done, just wanted people to know the other side of the coin. Paul Craig nailed it in his response in a lot less words. This forum is about sharing, and as I keep saying “there’s more than one way to skin a cat” so I will not be getting upset if your way does not suit my way. You know what I do……I go a try it for myself.
If you are still here. Thanks Taff.

I'm still working on my 1st one, but have completed two others, with 3 more in various stages of completion. I read a lot have watched videos until my eyes bled coupled with life experience, I give advice If I can. If not I try to point in the general direction of who would know. I'm sorry for your experience, but it seems we don't have an administrator/ monitor to intervene when someone's self importance goes to their head. Guess they forgot we are a community of like minded and "help" each other however we can.

Sorry to hear there was some trouble.,We welcome your input Taff.,.,we all have a different perspective at times.,.,true people can interpret posts and advice differently.,.,but I personally have always thought you come across as a knowledgeable guy.,.,we share the same interests and you obviously know what your up to.,,.10 guitars.,.,a thousand.,.,we build what we build.,.,keep your chin up.,.,your not doing anything wrong.,.,unfortunately computers breed trolls.,,.  have i veered off the subject.,.,??

Second that! Taff I consider you one of my mentors, when ever I have a question no matter how newbie it sounds, you are one of the first to step up and advise me and that I thank you for it!

Hey, Taffy.  I have seen your git pics and videos and read your comments.  I regard you as a luthier and not just a CBG luthier- a level or two up from most of us.  I missed the now deleted post.  If I would have seen it I hope I would have had the guts to call the person on it.

Shrug it off.  Move on.

i saw the original post and i saw it the same way Taff did.

Taff , your input here has been very helpful to me. I thank you for all you have done.

I think it was mostly a misunderstanding.

I don't have a side in the issue, just wanted to referee the situation at the time and I don't think it will go any further.

Well put taff...
