Question? When I cut opening on my cigar box for the neck, I cut it so the neck doesn't touch the box lid on the inside when the box is closed. Is this ok or should I add something to the neck to fix it? Thank you in advance.

its  a lot easier to show you, rather than telling you how?

Hi Kimberly, in a few words, I hope.

The top is where the sound starts, after hitting the strings, the better it vibrates the better the tone and output. So anything like overbracing, pickups, embellishments and the neck through portion of the neck that contacts the top has its own detrimental effect.

Taff

Thank you for your help.

Contrary to  popular  belief   that  you will  get   better  resonation  with  a space ,  I believe gluing right to  the top  resos  the whole guitar as  one much better.  Most that have tried  the same  exact  box  trying both  ways, say the one glued to  the lid actually sounded better. Many  also  say they can't tell the difference  . I have seen established builders that swore by leaving a space( for years ) ,change their minds and building techniques after  trying attaching the neck right to the box .

Keep in mind , there are variables that will effect outcome . Including wood choice, acoustic or electric,  pickup mounting technique , size  , etc etc etc .

There does seem to be 2 camps on the topic still .  I’m in the” attach and feel the whole guitar vibrate as one solid unit” camp.

More on the topic .

but in a short answer , in cbg building , it doesn’t usually make a big difference .

Thank you.

I actually build them both ways, but for some reason, I really dig the process of notching the neck. But that’s me, to each their own? We always have to keep our minds open to different techniques if we’re gonna evolve? Cheers :D
