I am almost ready to do my very first complete wiring job, on my own build.
It will have a lipstick neck pickup, and a strat type pickup at the bridge, with a 3 way toggle switch SPDT.
Neither of the pickups are humbucker type, and just have hot and ground wires.
I have some fender type 250k tone and volume controls ( volume with capacitor connected.
I am considering putting some kind of metal device in the box to connect all my grounds to including the telecaster bridge I have fitted.
Can anyone help me with a sort of back of fag packet drawing bearing in mind my lack of knowledge in this area. I have been playing guitar, and gigging for over fifty years, so I am proficient with soldering.
I really want to keep the system very basic, that is not too many controls, as I have done the front of the box in copper sheet, which I have patternated with a flame. And I don't want it to look too cluttered, even just 2 volume controls with the 3 way SPDT
would work. So if any one can help I would greatly appreciate it.
Be gentle with me because, it's my first time lol.

Thanks In Advance

Switching wires = where you would solder the live wire in the circuit you wire the ground wire instead and where you would solder the ground wire you wire the live wire instead.

This video listed helps explain well.

I would suggest you first wire everything as your supposed to just to see how it works out. You may already have one pickup that is RWRP and not be aware of it. Then you can change the wires if you don't like the result. Some people like that out of phase tone or can make good use of it and some don't. If switching the wires don't help, then you'll need another pickup that is RWRP. If the pickup has a bar magnet glued across the bottom, you can cut through the glue and flip the magnet over to reverse the polarity of the pickup.

On your switch issue, The switch can be on/on, on/off/on or on/on/on. usually the switch will have marking on the side or on the package that will tell you. Basically the pickup's hot wires will go to a outer leg of the switch and the other pickup to the other outer leg. Center leg goes to the volume pot.

If the switch is on/on/on, then you can you either pickup or both when playing. If the switch is on/off/on, both pickups will be silent. ON/ON switch just lets you use this one or that one.

Hope all this helps and don't let it intimidate/frustrate you. we can help with whatever comes up.

Thank you so much, I hope to have the new 3 way switch during the week so will do as you suggest. I am one of those people who likes to have things clear in my mind, before starting. It's good to know that people on here have my back, so to speak. I am most grateful, as it will stop me from worrying.
Take Care Phil

Always good to know every little thing before you start. That way, you know what to do when a problem arises so it can be solved the right way.

Some people just slap things together. After-all, they have a 50% chance of getting it right. But if it doesn't, then they can make it worse trying to fix it the wrong way.

I don't mind helping out and others here are like minded.

Hi, back again, job done to your diagram David, it worked a treat, though I haven't strung the guitar up yet.
I managed to check it out by tapping the poles etc with a screwdriver whilst plugged in.
I did manage to wire the DPDT switch in reverse, which just meant reversing 2 wires.
Where the telecaster hard tail bridge screws came through the reinforced section inside, I attached a length of copper to the screw ends, and filled the copper with wells of solder, and then attached all the ground wires to this, and it seems to have worked a treat, I have tidied up the wiring and now have some aluminium tape left over from a van to campervan conversion I did a couple of years ago, and I will shield the electrics with this.
Thanks to all of you for your help in this regard, I won't forget it.
Just got to string up and hopefully finish the neck setting.
Thank you all so much
Phil
Hi Phil,

Well done :0)

Regards,
David
Back again, it seems I spoke too soon, when I tested the pickups the guitar wasn't strung up I just tapped the pickups in the relevant switch positions.
I've since strung it up and the pickups are doing the strangest thing.
They seem fine for a minute or two and then the sound slowly goes down, goes off for a few seconds, and then back on, in a continual loop.
It's not like an intermittent make and break, it's weird.
If it were one pickup working against the other I would have expected the audio to have been OK in either just the neck or just the bridge switch positions but it's not.So I'm absolutely beat. It's such a shame as the guitar, a 6 string looks really good and the action is great.
I must admit it's knocked me back a bit, it was going so well.
I hope someone can help.
Thanks in advance.
Phil

So both pickups are stopping after a while or just one?

That could be a pickup issue a cable issue or a amp issue. Do you have another cable and amp to test on to rule those out?

I have tried another cable, but don't have another amp to try. I do have an old radio which I can fit a jack socket, will have to try that.
It's happening with both pickups.
Thanks for the response
Phil

Well we know it's not a cable issue. Look over all the places that were soldered to make sure you have a good solder joint. If the solder is balled up - no good. look for broken wires that could be touching now and then(could be at a soldered joint or in the insulation).

Output jack could be shorting out. Could be an issue in the amp. Not likely that both pickups are bad.

It did find a dodgy connection eventually, and as long as i put my Blackstar amp in manual mode it seems ok but in other sound modes it doesn,t like the guitar at all.

I.m going to hack an old radio, with a jack socket, and try it on that.

Beginning to wish i hadn,t given away my little practice amps now, but i suppose next time i see a beginner strugglingwithout kit i will still probably do the same again.

Thanks for your response.

Phil

You could have a amp problem. Is this your only guitar? If this problem only happen on your CBG, then it has to be confined to your CBG.

Can you post some pics of your CBG's wiring?
