Wondering where UK builders get their wood for CBG necks?  All B&Q seem to have is cheap pine and other wood merchants aren't much better.  I could trek out to my nearest sawmill and get some proper hardwood but it's a bit of a distance and I can't help thinking I should be able to get what I need closer to home.

I notice that poplar is mentioned a lot but I've not seen that for sale in the UK, anyone know where I can get a stick of that?

not saying he wont reply to you though,

I'd be interested in mahogany, depending on size and condition. Sounds like it might take a while to sort. If you let us know when you're ready I'll mail you to discuss details. No rush because I've got a few projects lined up that I've already got neck timber for.

Hi guys...I have just got a load of mixed hardwood strip in...mostly oak and mahogany, plus a bit of tulipwood (yellow poplar). It's in a variety of random sizes, 25 x20mm, 30 x 50mm, thru' to 75 x 30mm and all sorts in between, plus a few wider boards (mainly waney-edged tulip up to about 30 x150) and in approx 2500mm lengths.

I need to check it over and grade it, but if you need wood I got it (about 1/2 tonne of the frickin' stuff!). I'll try and sort it out and offer it in useable sizes and I'll be able to cut to length and post stuff out to you if anyone is interested in it.
I get mine from 'G W Leaders' in Middlesbrough (if you want the address, email me - very easy to find just off the A66), but they have branches all over the North East - just dont go buying all the stock cuz I need some next week! lol

Im always good for off loading some wood onto John, whatever the flavour!

where are you from? its good to know that we have like minded builders locally.  john

That's a bit out of my way so it'll have to wait for this trip. CBJohn - I'll take enough for a guitar or two off you, or Roosterman - the same from you. I'm not fussy about what I get, although would be handy if dimensions were close to the magic 45mm x 20mm. I just want enough so that I can attempt my first couple of CBGs. If I like it and get into building then I can work out a more permanent supply then.

Ordered a fret slotting saw today so one may even have frets - the excitement! Also thinking about making one of those diatonically fretted instruments too. The possibilities! I think it's just great that you can make these instruments for so cheap - it really encourages experimentation. That you can do a build pretty quickly is also attractive to me as my free time is often at rather more of a premium than I would choose it to be.

As luck would have it my Uncle-in-law gave me a load of elm and oak when I was down in England last week. He even cut it to size for me so I have plenty to be going on with right now. I also have a nice large chunk of mahogany that I will do something with in the future.

i live in stockton, and have used leaders before, but not for cbg building, i have'nt made one yet, just gathering part's, what hard wood's do they have, and how much does it cost,?
managed to get over to "leaders" had to sort through all the 2" x 1" stock they had, about 60 length's, only 2 length's were straightish, might get about 5 neck's out of them, counter bloke said it was "luani" wood, or something like that, just waiting for a cutlery box to arrive off ebay for my body, and going to a carboot on sunday to see if i can find a old knackered guitar to get the p/up's tuner's etc off it,

Hi J It is called tulip wood in the uk,I use it for making my upright dog puzzles, try Arnold Laver.I hope to make my first cbg in the near future, I would like to make a resonator cbg but want to make my own resonator.I bought this of e bay this morning, it's an8.5x2.5 stainless steel storage tin. Would this work? Mal
