I'm new at this social-networking thing, but i was surprised to go to that cigarbox.com web-site and find my name in the headlines for one of their articles.

umm--mmmm-mmm ???  how does that work ???

does that mean 'allowing anyone' to see what i write means that i have given them the right to copy and reprint my ( or anyone' s) comments. ????

seems  odd, if not downright illegal...

certainly, morally reprehensible, and lazy  .....

just so that they can avoid writing their own articles and claim they have a website ????

is this SOP for social net-works ???

did i miss something ????...  zandi z.

First off, I am not a Lawyer. These are OPINIONS only.

I guess that depends on your point of view. The 'Net' is considered for the most part a broadcast medium, and yet for most sites like this and others, your comments are owned by the site manager/owner [ie: in this case Shane Speal]. This is what gets file and music sharing sites in so much trouble.

Now, that doesn't mean that the designs, ideas, instructions, advice, comments and opinions I post here aren't inherently their originators and not subject to copyright laws, but the actual post of that information is indeed Shane's (as far as I understand).

Case in point: John Lowe makes the 'Lowebow'. It's his design, methodology and technology and he has every right to guard that information the best he can. He does not post how he makes his Lowebow AND will now allow anyone else to copy or use the name 'Lowebow'. He has the foresight to do that.

Even if he were to 'tell his secrets', those would still be his BUT he has released them to the public domain (broadcast them in effect). His posts could be used in that spirit. We enjoy that when we reply to a post with the original post quoted. Its assumed ok. BUT it's up to the user to ask permission to be used elsewhere. Heck, I even had one of my pictures reposted as someone else's. Flattering, but was still mine. I reposted one of Shane's CBGs as part of a spoof on one post here (he he he).

I am designing something based on the Cigar Box Nation red star logo. I asked permission to use that basic design element even though I didn't use it exactly. I'm so nice ain't I.

So here's the best remedy: Honestly, I wouldn't let it bother you UNLESS the use is taken out of context, libelous, harmful or slanderous, otherwise used for illegal or deceitful purposes. If it really bothers you, write to the site manager and ask for a retraction or deletion of your name or quotation. I assume its not this site that is. If they don't ... eh ... I guess you should not post to that site or close out any membership on that site, or... I dunno. Legal action would REALLY hard to enforce I would assume.

The Net is tricky like that. It's also an international medium.
Oh and I could be totally wrong about it all...

Not to support or contradict myself, but the question is interesting. Here is something I found online (of course)

http://www.boduweb.com/blog/05200920/content-ownership-the-biggest-...

I'm sure this is a highly debated concept in this new online world, but I simply am not asking [Google] the right question. That is, I'm notta find'n much.

It took me aback.... as far as i could tell, what was there were EXACT POSTS from this Forum Discussion group and Ted's new group.
no slander, no libel...no gripe, really.
i was just surprised to find my name in bold type with my exact post from here on a whole other site.
i believe most of the other posts are taken directly from this forum... I now know that whatever is posted on this forum is replicated---- perhaps---inexpected places...
as i said, now i know....
hey, it might be convenient, someday.....hehehe....
thank you for your response.......zandi z.

Gary,
i'm 65 and have studied lots of stuff from Esoterica to Quantum Mechanics, so don't get all sophomoric on me--- and, i do not mean that in an unkind way.
it was a long long time ago that i first understood that 'glass houses' are really the norm of existence, too.

i joined the nation because i found that CBGs and the vast diversity of participants here were the most complete, and most coherent, joyful expression of String Theory.

and, i am not averse to having my words appear synchronistically somewhere other than where i post them... just surprised at the speed of it all.

as far as i'm concerned, we are ALL (you, me, them,it, the Universe) the same entity---- just percieving Reality from different perspectives or dimensions... and i use the term 'entity' pretty loosely... no need to start a cascade of arguments from deists, theists or athiest....

I am very fond of Resonance and ADORE this version of STRING THEORY......zandi z.
