Ted,

I'm betting it will work. It erases some nasty hum on my guitars, always. I use disks, the only thing is you will get a signal from the piezo (ok so far for me), so it will add sound unless there's a separate volume control, which could be messy. (probably not for you). Or the piezo can be buried where it won't add to the signal. Best.

Dan

Did it work?

Hi Ted--Daniel here again---wondering if you can help. building a cigar box fender spec bass. one jazz pickup, one 4 pole "vintage pickup", and my traditional two piezos under the bridge. I'm going to use traditional jazz bass pots. so here's my question. the pots are not hooked up, but all the wires from the pickups are routed though the future jack hole. i used alligator clips(jumpers) to test the pick-ups, and am getting more buzzing than i ever have. kicking in the piezos calms it down as usual, but it's still bad. the bridge is grounded. the other weird thing is when i put my hand on the strings, which usually quiets it down, the buzz changes but is still there. COULD IT BE THE ALLIGATOR CLIPS? (JUMPER WIRES).

Attachments:

It could be the jumpers.  I've solved some buzzing problems by resoldering all the solder points.  Try soldering it all together and see if the buzz is still there.  Good luck!

Bridge

Thank you Ted, I wasn't too confident with the jumpers.

On-line the suggestion is that I shield the box with copper tape. If you don't mind another question, when I install my harness, which is already grounded (or will be) to the jack, should I keep it away from the copper. In other words, if I nest the pots in the holes with the copper, won't it create a ground loop. In one video I watched the guy put the grounded harness right into the copper. Thank you.

The copper tape is conductive and meant to be part of the ground circuit.  I usually use conductive paint in my cavities and solder a ground wire to a small brad inside the cavity.  Also, if there's a pickguard lined with copper tape, I usually run a ground wire with a stripped end which will contact the copper when the guard is screwed in place.

Thank you. Then I assume the jack would also be in the copper, even though it's grounded from the last pot? I really appreciate learning this, I thought there shouldn't be multiple paths to ground. (jack) Certainly makes it much easier. Sorry to be redundant, just a good understanding of ground is certainly sound.

Ted, I am trying to wire my first electric guitar and am using Snake oil Humbuckers from Gitty. They only have a single wire with what I assume is a hot wire and a braided ground wrap. Would I just use the 2 pickup each with a tone and volume pot, 3 way switch and jack schematic for this. Thanks, John

Correct John - hot wire and braided ground.  I would use the 2 vol/tone/3 way diagram.

Hi Ted: Hope you'll be able to enlighten me. Maybe you have one of these diagrams out there and I missed it. I have a one mag pickup, tone and volume config on a CBG. Is there a way to put a peizo in there and just be able to add a toggle switch that will switch me back and forth from mag to peizo?

Thanks, Tm

Not really Tim, a toggle will only let you switch on/off one pup,  with both mag and piezo you need independent volume controls to be able to play thru both and hear the piezo. In theory you can activate the piezo (without volume) with a toggle and crank the mag volume down to hear both.  But if you use a 3 way switch and 2 volume controls instead of a toggle you can play thru one or the other or both.  I recommend using volume for both pups because of the huge difference in output so you can get a good balance when played together.  This wiring diagram is how I do it:

Or you can use a blend pot instead of a 3 way:

Or go without a switch and both out to the jack (I don't like this, I like to be able to remove the piezo from the circuit, more than just turning piezo volume to zero):

Good Luck!
