Hi everyone was too scared to build 3 string cbg (even though got all the parts) untill I seen justin johnsons vid on making a diddley bow and though hell I can do that! So my first build is guna be a one string electric diddley bow!

Ive a few questions which is best pick up? bridge or not sure name of the other think its a humbucker?

What length?

What strings to use ive standard 3 string set and E string and A string of electric bass guitar! Im a huge classic rock fam ACDC, Metallica, Van Halen etc, so based on that type of music which string?

Using a home built cigarbox with sound holes and a through neck broom handle!

Would appreciate any imput or ideas!

Thanks in advance guys!

if you keep the string close to the broom handle you can fret it like fretless see Brickdust at work on a one string for some inspiration

Will there not need to have frets on it for you to be able to finger fret?
Just looked this up will defo do that thanks a million!
In regards to a bridge what material would not be suitable for electric diddley bow, had a few ideas but finding hard to get materials was guna use a bullet but hard to come by here, then guna use tiny bottle of whiskey but it's too big so what's left is hard plastic bridge but is plastic ok to use or wood?

Use whatever you have.  A bolt, a nail, an old key, a plastic chopstick, a bit of hard wood or plastic, bone ........if you don't like it you can change it later.  If you use something like a nail and it's not high enough, glue it to a bit of wood.  All it does is support the string and transmit vibration from the string to the box so, for a basic home-made instrument, any hard material will do.

Cool thanks!
Phase two complete almost finished my cigarbox diddley bow guitar today! Realised I had no paint brush last night so had to wait till today to varnish it! Still not dry so guna leave finishing it off till tomorrow all that it needs is connecting the electrics and stringing it up! Hopefully will have photo up of my first CBG tomorrow! :-)

I would say don't over think it, just have fun experimenting.

Pickups - I don't think there's a "best" Just depends what sound you like, and if you're playing it at home, or need to get loud in a pub or something. Elamar's pick ups are great and he does them for Diddley Bows http://www.original-flatpup.com/fp1

I put one of his on this bass Diddley Bow and love the sound!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xbthoy3G5Es

Bob Harrison's pickups are excellent too http://www.harrisonguitarpickups.com/  Here's my D Bow with one of those on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-AuJgdZHTY

or you can go cheap and cheerful with a piezo under the bridge....you could always try that first and if you don't like it try something else. I still really like my first D Bow I made which has a piezo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqgTNNrsHFo

Also good to experiment with the strings. Maybe the bass strings might be pushing it a bit with a broom handle neck??..so maybe one of the lower guitar strings. You can always do another one with a stronger neck with a bass string. Once you start you'll find you HAVE to make another one, and another one......!

3 old rusty iron nails and about 7000 turns of
0.43-3mm wire and some ni magnets underneath
Should do the trick
See my domino pickup
Sounds as good as it looks lol
But if you want cheap any .99p fender pickup
From china sound ok to me..
After all its just the Sam thing
But Old 6" iron nails sound better to me.
Flat pups for perfection though I agree.
Hi thanks great stuff, I've a few pics up of build so far on my page hopefully finished product be up today! Even though I said broom handle I actually didn't use an actual broom handle I used a wooden curtain rail which is a lot thicker not sure if it's stronger than a broom handle or not but it looks stronger!
Ps when I was researching CBG on YouTube before I got one a watch all your vids great stuff could say I'm a fan!!:-)

ah cheers,  yes I guess the curtain pole should be stronger. If in doubt, try it! Will take a look at the pics....

Check out Juju's Diddley resonator Bemuzic now
has It...Pretty awesome..
An old cat bowl or tin sounds good too as a reso.

Good luck look forward to seeing it and hearing it..
