Thanks Scott. I used to play bass in bands 25 years ago and this is making me remember why I liked to back then!

Thanks Chuck. Good to hear from you! Yeah, these are regular bass tuners from Ebay maybe $20 I think. I had to widen the slot on all but the G string which I did by using an appropriate size drill bit and drilling down and wiggling around till the slot opened up. One of the peg sides bent while doing this but didn't break so you have to be careful. I just got a set of Pahoehoe strings which seem a little thinner and don't feel quite as gummy as the Aquilas so now I too have to make another just to try them out!

Jim it sounds great!
I have been trying to gather some parts for another UBass build for my Son and apparently there isn't anyone selling the "Ashbory" bass tuning machines anymore. I think I paid about $25 for the set a few years ago which I didn't think was too bad. It looks like you used some standard bass tuning machines on yours, did you have any trouble fitting the larger Thundergut strings on them? Where did you get them and how much were they?
Glad to see and hear your UBass turned out Great!

Oh yeah RTZ, I'm extermely fond of odd ducks! I have limited experience with piezos of any kind but it seems like the rods under the bridge have a more balanced sound than the discs. I haven't tried the double disc method yet but it seems like you could play with placement that way and even things out.

Thanks RTZ. Yeah, I played one of the Ashbory basses around 15 years ago and didn't like the gummy strings. The newer gen of strings is less gummy but still feel odd. I just received a brand called Pahoehoe and they feel less rubbery than these Aquilas. Now I have to make another one just to use the strings. I think they've caught on since they're so compact and easy to carry around you can surprise people at how decent they sound.

I seen one them thing about ten years ago in a store and had to play it. Giant rubber band Uke. I was wondering if they would catch on seems so.  I like the under saddle pickups I got a bunch from Ben much cleaner then the disk. Odd duck but a nice build JIm.

Thank you James.

Thanks BUG. These are Aquila Thunderguts made for short scale bass. Pricey but neccessary. I put weedwhackrs on some of my full size basses and I think they would be too floppy for this 20" scale.
