I finally got around to making this after being inspired by similar builds by Chuck Cobillas and Hilo Greg on CB Nation. The fret lines are cut and filled wi...

I took some notes on the on the strings for future reference. This is great info! Thank you for sharing it.
Thanks Janis. The low notes on this short scale are really only possible with the strings made specifically for it. These are Aquila Thundergut strings but there are a couple of other brands available.
Jim, this is a masterpiece! I would never have thought it possible to get that low with such a short scale. That is awesome! I love your performance as well. You rock!
Oh yeah, Paul L, check out Daniel Hulbert's vids. He's made some real nice ones and usually shows how he does it.
Thanks Greg. I just wanted you to see what you and Chuck Cobillas inspired me to do. Yup, walking bass would be a challenge on 2 strings, even more so on fretless! I also ordered some strings called Pahoehoe which feel a bit less gummy than the Aquilas. Now I must build another just to compare strings!
Thanks Paul. Yup, pretty much my usual heel extension through the box design. I took measurements from a friend's Kala bass since I wasn't sure of the nut width. (1 13/16). I don't usually attach the through piece to anything but the tail end since I'm always looking for the best acoustic sound I can get. The only thing sort of a problem was that I had to widen the tuner slots for all but the G string since those Thundergut Strings are pretty fat.
Thanks Paullus. Good luck with the build - hope to see/hear it.
Thanks Old Fingers. Yikes, nowhere to build! That'd be like nowhere to take a dump for me 'cause stuff would just keep piling up inside of me! Yeah part of it for me is to have tiny up to very large and everything in between. This is something I hadn't done before so it was quite satisfying.
Hi Jim, That is an incredibly great looking, great sounding bass! I love the sound of the Thundergut strings too. I will probably have to do a 4-stringer now, because it's a little tricky to do a walking bassline on the 2-string.
Nevertheless I tip my fez to your building and playing skills. And, it was very gracious of you to give me a shout out. The CBN boards continue to be a friendly source of support, information and inspiration!
Looks & Sounds great Jim! I have a KALA U-BASS & it sounds much the same. Would love to see more pictures of it and would also love to jawbone about the build experience with you sometime, cause I think I would like to try to build a couple myself. Any tips, or problems to avoid? Is it a "through-the-box neck" like most CBG's??
Just fantastic! I've been toying with this idea for ages. This has just reminded me why! Unfortunately I have nowhere to build at the moment but one of these is definitely next on the list! Then I'd just need a baritone and I'd have built one of every size from "pocket uke" upwards. Fantastic work and great playing!
