Not sure what I would have done with myself without my CBG during lockdown. I’m too impatient to learn a full 6 string and too musically minded to not play anything. Perfect instruments.

Profile Information

How did you learn about Cigar Box Nation?: Searching on the internet out of fascination of CBGs and really wanting to learn how to build/play them. Finding Shane Speal’s turorials on YouTube having watched a documentary about CBGs.

How many instruments have you built so far?: One so far but there’s certainly more on the cards-I’ve acquired another box to get me going!

What do you find most interesting about cigar box guitars? (If you do not enter something meaningful here (at least one sentence long), your membership may be rejected as a spam/bot fake account).: The fact that, without any rules standardising them, they can be played seriously and can make some great noise. I love the history of CBGs considering they originated during the American Civil War in which 50,000 of my own countrymen fought and that they gave rise to some of the all time great blues musicians like Lightnin’ Hopkins. When I was younger I tried learning a regular off the shelf 6 string which I haven’t got the patience for but having acquired my first CBG I’m not looking back as it’s opened up the personal ability to enjoy playing music, a whole new genre of music which I’ve previously overlooked and 150+ years of fascinating heritage as an instrument so seriously unique yet diverse.
