Hi all, so I finally at the third attempt managed to build a 'guitar' that works. It's a four string 2x4 lap steel. I bought some D'Addario EXL145 Nickel Wound 12-54 strings and following the E-B-E-B…Continue

"I think you would like the E major tuning that Samuel Brown mentions.  EBEG#.   You will need a chromatic tuner (or any tuner and a bit more knowledge than you probably have right now.)  Have fun."

Tuning a 4 string lap steel

Hi all, so I finally at the third attempt managed to build a 'guitar' that works. It's a four string 2x4 lap steel. I bought some D'Addario EXL145 Nickel Wound 12-54 strings and following the E-B-E-B tuning set it up, first E obviously being the 54 string. The first three strings progress in tone nicely but the 4th one just sounds out of step. The tuning for the strings out of the packet is, according to the packet, E-A-D-G.Now I have ZERO musical knowledge so could someone point me in the right…See More

"Hi Taffy and thanks for the reply. Understood on the earth for the bridge and the mesh I'm a bit confused as to your reference to a 3-way switch though as I can't see one on that diagram? Thanks."

Taffy Evans replied to Laurence Owen's discussion single humbucker wiring question
"Hi, if you only have one pickup then you will not have the 3way switch shown in that diagram. Take the centre wire of that switch as your pickup hot wire, and follow the wiring to the pots from there. As you say the braided  wire is the earth…"

As it says, I'm close to finishing my first guitar and installing the pickup is frying my brain.I had initially bookmarked this link: https://guitarelectronics.com/1-humbucker-1-volume-1-tone/but the wiring is different to my pickup.I have a single wire coming out which splits into a white sleeved one and a mesh which I take to be the earth.Based on the above diagram where do I run the white…See More

Pickup to string distance

Hi, still in the process of gathering components etc for my guitar which WAS going to be a shovel variety but may yet be made out of an old pew.I have bought a double coil humbucker for use and am curious just how far it is possible to have the strings from the surface of the pickup?I plan to be going fretless so there is a good spacing between neck and string which also obviously occurs at the pickup. So, what's the reckoning?See More

I'm looking to build a shovel guitar followed by guitars using other items. I have read some of the forums and it seems a good place for discussions on building these things as I am certainly NO musician!

Welcome to the nation Laurence, plenty of build/play info in the Resources tab, including a shovel guitar? Don’t forget to check out Glenn Watt & Del Puckett YouTube channel as well? Here’s a simple video of how to build the easiest cbg: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pmzvfyOizV8
