Piezo active preamp question

Started this discussion. Last reply by Paul Craig Jul 6, 2019. 21 Replies

I have a few questions about piezo pickups with an active (9V battery) preamp. In a large body cbg, I’m thinking of installing a system with 2 piezo discs (or perhaps one under saddle piezo rod and…Continue

Signal strength: Wiring a disc and rod piezo together

Started this discussion. Last reply by Paul Craig Jan 14, 2019. 15 Replies

I have wired a disc piezo and a rod piezo in parallel through a simple active (9V) endpin Jack preamp. I tested it before installing, by tapping them on the table. The disc piezo cane through strong.…Continue

Connecting rod and disc piezos

Started this discussion. Last reply by darryl kernaghan Oct 28, 2017. 4 Replies

I have a 3 disc transducer set that combine to one wire that then are soldered to a 1/4” jack. I have a rod piezo that connects (vis 2.5mm plug) to a 3 band active preamp (with a 9 volt battery),…Continue

Piezo disc transducer spec question

Started this discussion. Last reply by Paul Craig Oct 28, 2017. 19 Replies

I have read several discussions and articles about resonant frequency, many of them going pretty deep into the science/engineering of piezoelectrics. Much of it was over my head as a beginner, and…Continue

Paul Craig replied to Bryan Pieper's discussion Piezo active preamp question
"I got that you weren't asking about the value of the pot to be used at that point, I listed it because of the impedance coming from that piezo being higher, the 500k would help to minimize that issue. The pots for the preamp system are hard to…"

Bryan Pieper replied to Bryan Pieper's discussion Piezo active preamp question
"Great reply, Timothy. Yes, you’ve given me several things to think about, and I understand why they matter. So, just to answer a few of your questions: I intend for the bass and treble controls to both boost and cut the frequency. But of…"

"Taff - I love the idea of using multiple discs under the bridge. I have a couple questions: In my original plan, I wanted to mix the under saddle rod piezo with a soundboard disc piezo, because I wanted to get some of the soundboard vibration…"

Bryan Pieper replied to Bryan Pieper's discussion Piezo active preamp question
"No, it it is an active onboard preamp powered by a 9V battery. The blend pot will be between the piezos and the preamp (and thus probably 500K, due to the high impedance of the piezos), but the volume, bass, and treble control pots will not be…"

"So if I'm getting things right, we're talking about a passive EQ to adjust the tone and a mixing stage. The hard thing will be figuring out the value of the caps to use."

Timothy Hunter replied to Bryan Pieper's discussion Piezo active preamp question
"its not that simple when you are designing an active preamp. the pot values will depend on the capacitors used and the center frequency of the frequency band you want to affect. it depends on the type of circuit you are using. will the preamp be op…"

Bryan Pieper replied to Bryan Pieper's discussion Piezo active preamp question
"By the way, although I was not asking about the value of the blend pot, I agree that I’ll go with the higher value 500K blend pot, since the blend pot will be located between the piezo pickups and the onboard active preamp. The other pots,…"

Bryan Pieper replied to Bryan Pieper's discussion Piezo active preamp question
"One other note: Even though I am using piezo pickups, the system will not be high impedance, because it is a powered, active system. Thus, the pot values will be very different from what they would be if I were wiring a passive system that uses…"

After 20+ years as an attorney, starting to build guitars, canjos, mountain dulcimers, and CBGs as a hobby has allowed me to satisfy the natural desire to build something with my hands. Building musical instruments engages my mind and creativity, but in a tactile way that results in the satisfaction of a physical product that combines physics, craftsmanship, visual art, and music.

It has also broadened my musical tastes, as I appreciate certain genres more now that I know a bit more about the craft and the science behind the instruments.

Hey Bryan - I think I tried to lead you astray....wire your piezo's in PARALLEL to calm them down - it's been so long I got mixed up.
I wire my speakers in series to double up on the impedence.

Hey Bryan - I just saw your message - Wow, I haven't used piezos for a long time - I would wire the piezos in series because it seems to take the harshness out of them. I would usually glue the disc to the back of the neck inside the box. It's purpose was mostly just to calm down the rod, which did most of the work.

Hi there Bryan ! thanks for the like & comments on my f holes, been doing them for some time now and the give a nice box this exstra swave thing i think and they are not that gard to do(i think) you findsome nice examples anywhere  copy them on paper in the size you need, rub some charkkole on the bottom place them even on the box( think about left &right) draw them over whit a ballpointpen, so the charkkole rubs of on the box, drill small holes on the end points of the f holes, and you are ready to start cutting whit a saw, i use
