I was browsing around a thrift store in Dallas last weekend and came across a small (36") wooden ironing board with scissor legs. I didn't pick it up then, but got to thinking it could make an interesting lap steel. I went back yesterday in hopes that it hadn't been bought and there it was. And at half off the price. So, $3.50 to start building my first lap steel.

I have a nut, tuners are on the way unless I find some someplace else (daughter and I are hitting the antique malls and thrift stores this weekend). I have ideas for a bridge and tail piece. I have even thought of making my own pickup using an Altoids tin.

So many possibilities.

I can post pics when done or progress pics as I build.

That sounds like a fantastic lap steel to come. Is it a hardwood, antique ironing board? I've been looking for one in the UK ever since seeing Justin Johnson's ironing board lap steel on YouTube. If you haven't seen it you may get some ideas by searching for it on YouTube on Justin's YouTube channel.

It would be good to see your end results but even better to see your stage results. I think I remember cigarboxnation.com running some stories with member's walk through builds if you've got photos of the stages and a write up on it too. Might be worth contacting management here when you've got the writing and stage photos if that's something that you fancy doing. No harm asking, right?

All the best with your build and I for one, and I'm sure many others, look forward to seeing your final results.

I don't think it's an antique. I'm not a wood expert by any stretch, but I know antiques (usually) when I see them. It's most likely poplar wood. But it's in great condition structurally, some light scratches of the finish. But I'm gonna sand it down and stain it before I'm done so it doesn't matter.
Justin's video was the inspiration for making it.
I plan on taking pictures of the whole process, from the board itself, to the sketches for ideas, to the build. Mainly to have something to refer back to and also because us DIY types love to see that sort of thing.

Sounds like you've got this one sorted already, Brad, and I look forward to seeing those photos of it all. Best of fortunes with the build and have a great rest of the week too. :0)
